BISHOP’S THANKSGIVING OFFERING

This year’s Bishops Thanksgiving Offering will help support Feeding South Dakota and the Great Plains Food Bank, vital ministries that provide nourishment to thousand of our neighbors across the Dakotas. There will be a locked box in the gathering area for your donations. May your gratitude this Thanksgiving overflow into acts of grace.

 GRATITUDE AND GENEROSITY

As we approach November, our hearts and minds begin to focus on gratitude and thanksgiving. There truly is so much that we have to be thankful for. But a part of gratitude is also generosity, our giving of ourselves because of what we have received. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be both grateful and generous- these two qualities simply go hand in hand. We will explore this theme as part of our “Faith, Hope, Love, and Life” sermon series leading up to Thanksgiving. Please join us for worship in November as we give thanks to God and also live out generosity in our daily lives and our walk of faith.

“A CHILD IS BORN”

Advent will soon be here, and we’ll be looking toward Christmas and all that it means for our lives and faith as Christians. Bishop Lanette will be leading a study on the book “A Child Is Born” on Monday evenings December 1-22 via Zoom. Participants can join in from home. We are planning on having a group meet at the church too. More details to follow. You can order the book on your own, or if you’d like we can order a quantity through the church office. Let Tonya or Pastor Keith know if you’d like to get your copy of the book through the church.

YOUTH GROUP NEEDS YOU!

Our weekly youth group is thriving with 25-30 kids each week- and we need more adult chaperones to stay in compliance with our Safer Sanctuaries policy. No teaching required! If you can volunteer for just one hour once or twice a month (or even every 6 weeks), we’d love to have you. There is a signup sheet on one of the high-top tables in the Gathering Area by the welcome sign or Contact Pastor Amber or Tonya if you’re willing to help or have questions. We are looking for a couple of individuals that would be willing to take the pictures prior to and following worship on those Sundays. We will have a camera available to use. If you are interested in taking pictures for us, please let Tonya or Pastor Keith know.

ANATOMY OF BELONGING

Anatomy is defined as the study of the structure of the human body, an animal, plant, or other organism.  In this sermon series Pastor Keith will be focusing on the realm of “belonging” and what makes a person feel that they belong or don’t belong.  Jesus was continually opening his arms and the doors of God’s Kingdom to invite people to belong.  As a church I believe that is a part of our mission too.  So, join us for this story as we study the characteristics or elements of what belonging is all about.

“ATTRACTED TO HOPE”

In his latest book, Attracted to Hope, Bruce Blumer talks of the power of hope that he has seen and experienced in the midst of the chaos of the world and even with his own difficult cancer diagnosis.  It is a book of encouragement that helps empower each of us to help create hope in our lives and in our world.  Bruce will be in our Church on Sunday, November 9 to talk about his book and also the ministry of Haiti Alive.  Copies of this book are in the Gathering Area.  The suggested donation for a copy of the book is $15.00.

FREE RESOURCES

Over the last several years we’ve offered various studies and other resources to you or church family. We are cleaning out our office closet to make more room. We have placed books and resources to give away in the gathering area by the “Welcome” wall. Take a look and take items you find interesting. No Charge. Just use them. Thanks!

SEPTEMBER “ONE THING”

Our September “One Thing” is individually wrapped snacks for our youth group. Examples would be individual packaged chips, crackers, or cookies.

OCTOBER “ONE THING”

Our October “One Thingwill be Green Beans for the Mitchell Area Food Pantry Thanksgiving Baskets.

PHOTOGRAPHER NEEDED

We are planning on taking photos for our directory for a few weeks in October and a few weeks in November. We will have a studio set up in our chapel for easy and convenient access.

Thanks!

VERSE FOR REFLECTION: 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (CEB)

There are different spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; and there are different ministries and the same Lord; and there are different activities but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. A demonstration of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good.

GARDEN SURPLUS

If you have excess garden produce, you are welcome to bring it to the church. There is a produce table in the Gathering Area. If you need/want the veggies, please leave a donation in the basket and take them with you. The money benefits World Hunger.

THANK YOU

The ALS Walk on Sept. 20th brought in $76,000. Our team “Burt’s Buddies” was able to donate $8,000! This church gave generously to help us reach that number. Our family is once again overwhelmed by your generosity! Thank you!!! The Wilson family

WELCOME REV. DR. AMBER LAFFEY

Pastor Amber Laffey is a Deacon in the UMC and is excited to serve in her new role as Pastor of Youth and Faith Formation. She is passionate about helping youth connect with one another and with a God who loves them deeply. Amber recently completed her Doctor of Ministry and loves cheering on young people and families as they grow in faith and courage. When she’s not at church, you’ll likely find her enjoying time with her husband, Tyler, their four kids- Ava, Corwin, Adeline, and Rose- or sipping coffee, walking the dog and cheering for the Parkston Trojans.

PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY

The United Methodist Church uses this day to speak out for peace and justice. Our Social Principles call us to love our enemies, seek justice, and serve as peacemakers in resolving conflict. We renew our commitment that to live into our mission of transforming the world, we must prioritize collaboration among nations, work to reduce the use and need for weapons, and foster just, equitable and durable solutions to the root causes of conflict. Contributions support programs that witness to God’s demands for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world.

THANK YOU

Thank you to all the volunteers that helped our church with hosting the Celebration of Life in Ministry Service last week. We received many compliments on our friendliness and our hospitality. We couldn’t host these events without you, our church family, so thank you! We appreciate you!

CALL TO WORSHIP:

L: We believe in the risen Christ.

even in the eyes of a stranger.

L: We hear the voice of Christ in the stillness of the night,

P: And in the song that brings tears to our eyes.

Silent Reflection~ Pastor’s Prayer ~ The Lord’s Prayer

(I will be alternating between the Traditional and an Alternate that is more contemporary in wording)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; they will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen
