Global Aids Project

DECEMBER “ONE THING”

Our December “One Thing” is cup noodles for our new Little Free Pantry (which will be installed by the ramp.)

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS

If you would like to purchase a poinsettia to help us decorate our worship center for Christmas, please fill out a Christmas Poinsettia Order Card, located on the table as you enter the worship center or on the Welcome Desk by the church offices. The cost is $15, and the deadline is Monday, December 15th.

COMMITMENTS

Thank you to all that have filled out and returned a commitment card. You still have time to fill one out if you have not done so yet. There are cards on tables throughout the church. Filling out this card is a way of celebrating the blessings God has provided as well as celebrating what God is doing in our midst.

REMEMBRANCE TREE

This Christmas, we invite you to stop by the hallway near the chapel and add an angel to our Remembrance Tree. You may write the names of any loved ones you’re missing along with a memory is you wish. As we decorate the tree together, we honor those who shaped our lives and continue to shine in our hearts.

“A CHILD IS BORN” ADVENT STUDY

We are offering two different times for this year’s Advent study- Monday evenings at 7pm led by Pastor Keith and Wednesday evenings at 7pm led by Natalie Piel. Bishop Lanette will also provide leadership in these groups through Zoom or video links. Books are available in the church office for $15.

LOVEFEAST

The Downtown FUMC Love Feast turkey dinner is next week Thursday, Dec.,18. Workers and donations are still needed. See the sign-up sheet in the gathering area prior to and after worship service.

We are accepting donations for new socks (all sizes) for our guests.

SAINT JOHN’S BIBLE ON DISPLAY

For the next couple of weeks, one of the volumes of The Saint John’s Bible will be on display in our gathering area. This stunning, hand-illuminated Scripture invites us to slow down, look closely, and let God’s Word speak in a fresh way. We are grateful to Dakota Wesleyan University for loaning us this volume so more people can experience this remarkable work. Take a moment to turn a few pages and enjoy this extraordinary blend of faith and art.

YEAR- END GIVING

As we enter the final month of the year, we invite you to consider Downtown Mitchell First UMC in your year-end giving plans. In addition to traditional gifts, the church is able to receive a variety of non-cash contributions such as grain, stock, and minimum required distributions. These options can offer meaningful stewardship opportunities while also providing potential tax advantages. If you have questions or would like guidance, please contact the church office or Craig McManus, the Finance Team chair.  We are grateful for the many ways you support the ministry we share.

VERSE FOR REFLECTION: James 5:7-8 (CEB)

Therefore, brothers and sisters, you must be patient as you wait for the coming of the Lord. Consider the farmer who waits patiently for the coming of rain in the fall and spring, looking forward to the precious fruit of the earth. You also must wait patiently, strengthening your resolve, because the coming of the Lord is near.

COMMITMENT SUNDAY

Today is our Commitment Sunday during our worship service. Commitment cards are available at one end of each pew. Filling out this card is a way of celebrating the blessings God has provided as well as celebrating what God is doing in our midst. We also invite you to write on the back of the Commitment Card the ways you are committing yourself to serving God in the year to come. During our offering time you, our church family, will be invited to bring your offering and your commitment card to the front of our worship space and place it in the baskets on the table on the platform. The reason for completing commitment cards is it provides each of us with an opportunity to consider the resources we will commit to God in the coming year. From the financial side, it helps the Finance team begin to prepare for the year to come. Thank you for the many ways you give to God.

GREETING:

CALL TO WORSHIP:

L: We gather today in the presence of God, who was and is to come.

P: We come, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses-those

who kept the faith, finished their race, and now rest in

     God’s peace.

L: We give thanks for the saints who showed us the way: for prophets

who spoke truth, teachers who opened Scripture, friends who

prayed, and loved ones who lived the gospel before us.

P: Their witness reminds us that the church is not bound by time

or place- that in Christ, death does not divide but unites us

      in one body.

L: So let us lift our hearts in praise to the Lord of every generation,

whose grace was sufficient for them and is sufficient for us.

P: To God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus, from

generation to generation, forever and ever. Amen.

BISHOP’S THANKSGIVING OFFERING

This year’s Bishops Thanksgiving Offering will help support Feeding South Dakota and the Great Plains Food Bank, vital ministries that provide nourishment to thousand of our neighbors across the Dakotas. There will be a locked box in the gathering area for your donations. May your gratitude this Thanksgiving overflow into acts of grace.

 GRATITUDE AND GENEROSITY

As we approach November, our hearts and minds begin to focus on gratitude and thanksgiving. There truly is so much that we have to be thankful for. But a part of gratitude is also generosity, our giving of ourselves because of what we have received. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be both grateful and generous- these two qualities simply go hand in hand. We will explore this theme as part of our “Faith, Hope, Love, and Life” sermon series leading up to Thanksgiving. Please join us for worship in November as we give thanks to God and also live out generosity in our daily lives and our walk of faith.

“A CHILD IS BORN”

Advent will soon be here, and we’ll be looking toward Christmas and all that it means for our lives and faith as Christians. Bishop Lanette will be leading a study on the book “A Child Is Born” on Monday evenings December 1-22 via Zoom. Participants can join in from home. We are planning on having a group meet at the church too. More details to follow. You can order the book on your own, or if you’d like we can order a quantity through the church office. Let Tonya or Pastor Keith know if you’d like to get your copy of the book through the church.

YOUTH GROUP NEEDS YOU!

If you can volunteer for just one hour once or twice a month (or even every 6 weeks), we’d love to have you. ANATOMY OF BELONGING

Anatomy is defined as the study of the structure of the human body, an animal, plant, or other organism.  In this sermon series Pastor Keith will be focusing on the realm of “belonging” and what makes a person feel that they belong or don’t belong.  Jesus was continually opening his arms and the doors of God’s Kingdom to invite people to belong.  As a church I believe that is a part of our mission too.  So, join us for this story as we study the characteristics or elements of what belonging is all about.

In his latest book, Attracted to Hope, Bruce Blumer talks of the power of hope that he has seen and experienced in the midst of the chaos of the world and even with his own difficult cancer diagnosis.  It is a book of encouragement that helps empower each of us to help create hope in our lives and in our world.  Bruce will be in our Church on Sunday, November 9 to talk about his book and also the ministry of Haiti Alive.  Copies of this book are in the Gathering Area.  The suggested donation for a copy of the book is $15.00.

We have placed books and resources to give away in the gathering area by the “Welcome” wall. Take a look and take items you find interesting. No Charge. Just use them. Thanks!

 WELCOME REV. DR. AMBER LAFFEY

Pastor Amber Laffey is a Deacon in the UMC and is excited to serve in her new role as Pastor of Youth and Faith Formation. She is passionate about helping youth connect with one another and with a God who loves them deeply. Amber recently completed her Doctor of Ministry and loves cheering on young people and families as they grow in faith and courage.
