PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY

The United Methodist Church uses this day to speak out for peace and justice. Our Social Principles call us to love our enemies, seek justice, and serve as peacemakers in resolving conflict. We renew our commitment that to live into our mission of transforming the world, we must prioritize collaboration among nations, work to reduce the use and need for weapons, and foster just, equitable and durable solutions to the root causes of conflict. Contributions support programs that witness to God’s demands for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world.

THANK YOU

Thank you to all the volunteers that helped our church with hosting the Celebration of Life in Ministry Service last week. We received many compliments on our friendliness and our hospitality. We couldn’t host these events without you, our church family, so thank you! We appreciate you!

MAY “ONE THING”

May’s “One Thing” supports the Bishop’s Miracle Offering, a special offering focused on a special project our Bishop chooses each year for Annual Conference. This year’s miracle offering is for UMCOR and Midwest Missions. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) is the Red Cross of the United Methodist Church, giving assistance wherever disaster and tragedy strikes in our world. We will have boxes out for cash donations for UMCOR, but we will focus more on our church donating the Personal Dignity Kits that Midwest Mission collects and sends out in support of UMCOR’s work around the world. You can pick up a gallon Ziplock bag at the One Thing display. Included will be a list of the items that are needed to fill out the kit. Thank you!

The Church Council has been discussing this statement and is interested in feedback from you, our church family. If you have thoughts or suggestions about this statement, please talk to one of the members of our Church Council.

MISSION OF THE MONTH

Heifer Project

Heifer International, also known as the Heifer Project International, is a global nonprofit that works to eradicate poverty and hunger through sustainable community development.

Thank you!

                       2 VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED

We are searching for 2 individuals to serve in the nursery for childcare during Annual Conference, Sunday, June 8th. The time will be from 8:30-noon, this would be during the Celebration of Life in Ministry. The conference is willing to pay these individuals for their service. Please let Becky or the office know if this is something that you are interested in.

“We exist to be the hands and feet of Jesus, sharing love and grace to all we encounter, by living out God’s Kingdom together.”

The above statement was developed out of a set of three leadership forums that our church held over the course of the past year. The purpose of this statement is to help us reclaim our identity and sense of purpose for why God has placed us in this community. The Church Council has been discussing this statement and is interested in feedback from you, our church family. If you have thoughts or suggestions about this statement, please talk to one of the members of our Church Council.

L: Today, we join Jesus in the final ascent to Jerusalem, knowing the

P: Open the gates of righteousness, that we may come

The Family Ministry Team is excited to introduce the Easter Art Project for 2025. There is a table in the gathering area with canvases and instructions. All ages are invited to participate! Please take one canvas per family and remember to include your name on the back.

CAMP SUNDAY

On Sunday, April 6th, we will be celebrating “Camp Sunday” during worship. Church camps are so important to our church and our youth, so we invite you to join us for service and to hear all about camp experiences. If you would like to donate to church camps, there will be a lockbox in the gathering area on one of the tables.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT YOUTH GROUP

We are planning on taking the youth to The Chosen: The Last Supper part 1 on Wednesday April 2nd. The movie starts at 7pm and we will meet back at the church around 9:15. The church is paying for the movie.

MAUNDY THURSDAY STATIONS

This year on Maundy Thursday, we will have a “Stations” display in the worship center. This will be a self-guided and experiential time of reflection to work your way through the 11 stations representing the last hours of Jesus’ earthly life. At the end of the stations journey, communion will be available with Pastor Keith from 12-1pm and 5:30-7pm. You can experience the stations anytime after 11am. During the time that Pastor Keith isn’t present, a table will have elements on it for you to take communion when you’ve completed the stations journey.

EASTER LILIES

If you are interested in purchasing a lily in memory of or in honor of a loved one, please fill out the card provided and return it to the office with your payment by Sunday, April 13th. The cost is $18. The lily cards are located at the entrances of our Worship Center.

RADIO BROADCAST ENDING

Our church has had a strong partnership with KORN Radio for many years. They have helped us reach well beyond the Mitchell area with our message of hope, grace, and God’s love. Due to our need to hold down ministry costs and the rising costs of radio broadcasting, the leadership of our church has decided to stop our radio broadcast at the end of April. Our full worship service will still be available on Mitchell Telecom channel 110 and on our website-www.downtownfirstumc.com. If you have family members who listen to the radio broadcast, please help them transition to one of the other means available to participate in our weekly Sunday Worship. Thank you.

THE LORD’S PRAYER…X2

The question has been raised, why do we use two different versions of the Lord’s Prayer: one being the traditional version and the other being a more contemporary version. This is a great question. It goes back to last year when we did a sermon series focusing on the Lord’s Prayer. At the same time one of the Sunday School classes was also learning about the Lord’s Prayer. The question was asked regarding what certain words meant, mainly because they aren’t words that we use anymore. Then the question was asked if we could use a version of the Lord’s Prayer that used words more like we use today. So, a version of the Lord’s Prayer was found that uses more “contemporary” language, and we’ve been using that one too. Some people said that they prefer and still use the traditional version all the time. And that’s OK. We’ve also had people tell us that using the two versions of the Lord’s Prayer in worship makes them think more about what the words really mean and what they are praying for.  Using the Lord’s Prayer isn’t just about reciting memorized words, it’s really about a format for prayer that is given to help us connect with God more deeply.

SERVANTS & HELPERS NEEDED

Dakotas Annual Conference (June 6-8, 2025) will be held in Mitchell on the DWU campus. The closing Ordination & Celebration of Ministry will be in our Worship Center on Sunday, June 8 at 10am. We need volunteers on Friday and Saturday to welcome attendees at the Sherman Center (DWU campus). On Sunday morning we will need volunteers to greet, welcome, provide hospitality, and help guide people to where they need to go. If you are interested in serving at DWU or here at our facility, talk to Tonya or Pastor Keith.

LENTEN STUDY

With Pastor Keith taking a class at DWU, he’s not able to lead a Lenten study this year. If anyone is interested in leading a study the Dakotas Conference is featuring a study, “The Third Day”, by Rev. Tom Berlin. District Superintendents will provide a weekly video of reflections, thoughts, and questions to enhance the study. If you’d be interested in leading this study, or some other material, talk to Pastor Keith or Tonya.

LUKE & ACTS IN 2025

Bishop Lanette is encouraging United Methodist across the Dakotas-Minnesota Area to join in a journey through Luke and Acts. This shared experience will foster a sense of encouragement, challenge, and community as we delve into the seamless story of Jesus’ life, ministry, death, resurrection, and the Spirit’s work through the early church. This week’s reading is Luke chapter 9.
