As of February 1st, our livestream platform (Livestream) was bought and changed to Vimeo, a completely new platform. Since this time, we have been experiencing some unfortunate events. COMING SOON!

Once again Family Ministries will have an Easter Art Event. A canvas with instructions will be available Sunday, March 3rd.  Families and individuals are encouraged to participate.

PRAYER FOCUS FOR LENT

Our prayer focus for Lent is “Create in me a clean Heart, O God”. Psalm 51:10 At our Ash Wednesday service a heart with a magnet attached was made available for people to take home as a reminder. Please feel free to take one or two and place them somewhere that you will see it daily and remind you to pray this prayer, just as King David did so many years ago.

The study is being called “Horns & Halos.” Sin isn’t a popular word in our world today, but it is very real and present. But the good news of our faith is that we don’t have to be dominated by sin. The virtues of the Christian Faith can help us experience freedom from sin. There are workbooks available for $14 in the office if you are interested. The study will begin Sunday, February 25th at 7pm.

COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS

It is important to talk and listen to one another in respectful ways even if we disagree with one another. This is the goal for the organizers of Courageous Conversations.  Each Courageous Conversation will frame a dialog around measures that will appear on the South Dakota November ballot. These conversations are held at DWU’s School of Business, Innovation, and Leadership and are free and open to the public. Check out the flyer on the bulletin board for the dates and times and for more information.

STAINED GLASS WINDOW PROJECT UPDATE

The remaining windows to restore and install the clear glass covering are the windows along the back of the church, east side children’s room and above the balcony and the back prayer room.

We are presently waiting to acquire additional funds, via donations, to complete this project. I am planning on restoring several of these smaller windows this spring with Kruse-Stained Glass. Each of these windows will cost $2,652.00 to restore.

I invite you to consider our windows project as an area to donate in memory of a loved one or a personal gift to our beautiful church-stained glass windows.

We are so grateful to all the donors that have made this possible.

HORNS AND HALOS LENTEN STUDY

Pastor Keith is going to lead a study during Lent looking at what are referred to as the seven deadly sins, but also looking at the corresponding seven life-giving virtues. The study is being called “Horns & Halos.” Sin isn’t a popular word in our world today, but it is very real and present. But the good news of our faith is that we don’t have to be dominated by sin. The virtues of the Christian Faith can help us experience freedom from sin. This small group experience will meet at the church on Sunday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:15pm. The Sunday worship messages during Lent will also follow this same theme. Come join us for worship and study to help your experience of Lent be meaning-filled. The study will begin Sunday, February 25th at 7pm.

 ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Church Season of Lent. Please join us on Wednesday, February 14th at 6:30pm in our Worship Center for an Ash Wednesday Service, including the imposition of ashes.

BUTTER BRAID SALES

Our youth will be selling Butter Braids starting Wednesday, February 21st. This is a fundraiser for their youth activities, camps, and mission trips. Contact any of our youth to place an order.

LEADERSHIP FORUM WORK

Be sure to stop by the chapel and check out the “blue wall” which represents some of the work done during the leadership forum. The white paper are things that our church has done or is working on. The blue paper is individual or family moments or involvement in our church. Feel free to add your own white or blue paper moments. Just press the paper to the blue surface and it will stick.

THE LORD’S PRAYER…X2

The question has been raised, why do we use two different versions of the Lord’s Prayer: one being the traditional version and the other being a more contemporary version. This is a great question. It goes back to last year when we did a sermon series focusing on the Lord’s Prayer. At the same time one of the Sunday School classes was also learning about the Lord’s Prayer. The question was asked regarding what certain words meant, mainly because they aren’t words that we use anymore. Then the question was asked if we could use a version of the Lord’s Prayer that used words more like we use today. So, a version of the Lord’s Prayer was found that uses more “contemporary” language, and we’ve been using that one too.

Some people said that they prefer and still use the traditional version all the time. And that’s OK. We’ve also had people tell us that using the two versions of the Lord’s Prayer in worship makes them think more about what the words really mean and what they are praying for.  Using the Lord’s Prayer isn’t just about reciting memorized words, it’s really about a format for prayer that is given to help us connect with God more deeply.

WHY ARE WE HERE??!!

Reclaiming our “Why”. An important question every ministry and organization must answer is “Why”…Why do we exist? Why are we here? Why has God put us in this place? These are great questions to ask…and answer. Our church leadership is asking this question for our church, and we want you, our church family, to help with the answer. This coming Sunday, February 3, a Ministry Retreat will be held at our church from 9:30am until about 1:30pm to help us start with this question. This retreat is open to all our church leaders as well as anyone from our church family that is interested in the life and future of our church. If you are planning on attending, please let Pastor Keith or Tonya know. This Saturday’s retreat will be the first of three planned for this year. The retreat will be led by Lin VanHofwegen, a Spiritual Director who works with leaders to provide clarity, focus, and vision.

RESERVING SPACE

If you need to use a space within our facility for a function or a gathering, it is important to call the church office and schedule your meeting with Tonya. This will ensure the space that you are requesting will be available and it also helps us to make sure we don’t double-book a space. Our open facility is just another way we let this community know we are “Downtown 4 Good!” Thank you!

STAINED GLASS WINDOW PROJECT UPDATE:

Happy New Year!! I felt this was a good time to bring forward the continuing stained glass window project. All the large windows have been restored and the outside clear covering installed. The smaller windows on the west and the south sides of the church are also all restored and the clear covering installed.

This has been a 7-year ongoing project, and we are so grateful to all the donors that have made this possible.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration towards the stained-glass windows restoration.

 OUR GOD GIVEN PURPOSE

To help our church regain a sense of purpose and vision for ministry in the community, the Church Council, and any interested church family, are invited to a retreat on Saturday, February 3rd at our church facility. This will be about a 4-hour experience of sharing, praying, and looking to who God is calling us to be. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending, if you have any questions, please talk to Pastor Keith.

SHROVE TUESDAY

Pancakes and Sausage are back! Tuesday, February 13th 11am-1pm and 4pm to 7pm. All you can eat for $10. Children under 5 eat for FREE. There will be a sign-up table in the gathering area before and after worship service. This event takes a village for its success! So please consider helping.

RESERVING SPACE

One of the great values of our church is that we want to be known as a gathering place for community groups or events that support our ministries or have a similar focus to what we do. This is why our church allows several groups to meet within our facility.

LIFE, FAITH, & RECOVERY

Pastor Keith’s sermon series that span all of 2024 (but not every week). Pastor Keith has long believed that all of us as followers of Jesus, are in recovery. Recovery from our addiction to sin (or missing the mark of God’s desires) in our lives. Once a month during 2024, Pastor Keith will focus on the connection between the 12 steps of Recovery and Spirituality, and how all of us as disciples of Jesus can benefit from the 12 steps in our lives.

PRAYER & PURPOSE

Today, Sunday, January 14, 2024, we are starting a year of growing in prayer and reclaiming our purpose as a community of faith here in Mitchell. You are invited to join us on this journey with a Conference Wide prayer focus in which we’ll use the book Dynamite Prayer to help guide us as we seek God’s Breakthrough Presence in our church and in our lives.  Books are available in the church office.

If you would like additional information regarding our operation deficit, please contact Pastor Keith or Denise Hoffman (denise.hoffman16@gmail.com). Donating grain or stocks is also an option for giving- contact Denise for more information. You can still stop by the office and fill out a commitment card if you haven’t filled one out yet. Thank you again for your support of Downtown FUMC.

CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES

 Sunday, December 24th 4:30PM and 6:30PM

(Christmas Eve Candlelight Services)

PRAYER & PURPOSE

2024 is going to be a year of growing in prayer and reclaiming our purpose as a community of faith here in Mitchell. You, our church family, is invited to join us on this journey with a Conference Wide prayer focus in which we’ll use the book Dynamite Prayer to help guide us as we seek God’s Breakthrough Presence in our church and in our lives. This prayer initiative will begin on January 14. Books are available in the church office. You can talk to Pastor Keith for more information.

HOSPITAL VISITATION

If you, or someone in your family is hospitalized, either here in Mitchell or Sioux Falls, please call the church office and let Tonya know. Pastor Keith does try to stop by the hospital several times a week, but we do make it more intentional if we know someone has been admitted. Also, when you are admitted, make sure your name is on the “Methodist” List. That way Pastor Keith will see it when he asks for the Methodist List. This is also true when someone is admitted to one of the care facilities in our community. Thank you for helping us care for our church family.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT YOUTH MEALS

There are many opportunities available to help with the meals in the coming new year for our youth. There is a signup sheet on the connection center desk. If you have any questions, please let us know.
